Jon Saffell, 84, of Glen Dale, WV passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Wheeling, WV. He had suffered from failing health and Parkinson’s for the last several years. Jon graduated from Moundsville High School in 1957 and attended West Liberty State College while working at Fostoria Glass Company where he was employed for 29 years. After Fostoria closed in 1986, Jon was self-employed doing Design Prototypes. In 1994, he began working as a product designer/sculptor with the Fenton Art Glass Company until retirement in 2004. Jon was a gifted sculptor, exhibiting and winning awards at numerous art shows. There are very few artists that can design for glass production. Fenton collectors worldwide continue to collect and appreciate Jon’s contributions to handcrafted American glass. There were many steps taken to complete a mould design beginning with a clay scale model. A Design Committee then approved this clay model and a rubber mould was made from the clay model. Lastly, a resin cast was made and the resin cast was duplicated into cast iron. Jon Saffell created the NFGS mouse, which has been produced almost yearly in a vast number of colors and painted in a myriad of designs. The NFGS membership has been honored to own one of Jon’s designs
